PDRN, explained: what salmon DNA actually does in skincare
Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) is a mixture of DNA fragments, most commonly derived from salmon, and it has become one of the most discussed ingredients in Korean skincare. Before you buy anything containing it — from us or anyone else — here is what it is, how it is thought to work, and where the evidence currently sits.
The short version
- PDRN is a purified chain of DNA fragments, typically sourced from salmon sperm or roe.
- It has a history of use in regenerative-medicine settings, where it has been studied for wound healing and tissue repair.
- In topical skincare, it is marketed for skin renewal, hydration and elasticity — and the honest position is that clinical-setting evidence is stronger than topical-cosmetic evidence.
The proposed mechanism
Research on PDRN describes two main pathways. The first is adenosine A2A receptor activation, which is associated in the literature with modulating inflammation and supporting tissue repair. The second is the salvage pathway — the idea that skin cells can recycle the nucleotides released as PDRN breaks down, using them as ready-made building blocks for DNA synthesis rather than making those blocks from scratch. Together, these are proposed to support the cellular housekeeping that repair depends on.
It is worth being precise about what that means: these mechanisms were described largely in injectable and wound-care research, not in serums. A mechanism observed in a clinical setting does not automatically transfer to a cream sitting on intact skin.
Where the evidence is strongest
PDRN's best evidence comes from regenerative medicine. It has been studied — most prominently in Italian and South Korean research groups — for wound healing and post-procedure recovery, typically delivered by injection under medical supervision. Injectable polynucleotide "skin booster" treatments are clinical procedures, including in Australia, and they sit in the medical category, not the cosmetics category. Nothing sold as a serum is that procedure.
Where the evidence is thinner
Topical PDRN — the serums, creams and mists you can actually buy — is a younger field. PDRN is a large molecule, and how much of it penetrates intact skin is a genuine open question; formulators respond by pairing it with delivery systems or positioning it for freshly resurfaced, post-procedure skin. Published topical studies exist, and some report improvements in hydration and skin texture, but they tend to be small and short. That does not make the ingredient useless — it makes the honest claim narrower than the marketing you will often see.
How we describe PDRN products
This is the standard we hold every listing to:
- Clinical-setting findings are labelled as such — we do not borrow injectable evidence to sell a topical product.
- Concentration and full INCI list are published for every formulation, so you can see exactly what you are buying.
- No miracle language. Skin renewal, hydration and elasticity are the claims the topical literature can support in principle; "erases wrinkles overnight" is not.
The bottom line
PDRN is a legitimately interesting ingredient with real science behind it — most of that science coming from clinical settings rather than cosmetic ones. If you enjoy well-formulated Korean skincare and want an ingredient with an active research story, it is a reasonable thing to try. If you are after guaranteed structural change from a serum alone, the evidence is not there yet, and we would rather tell you that plainly.
